When people hear the words premium clothing, many immediately picture cotton.
Cotton has earned that reputation for good reasons. It can feel soft, familiar, breathable, and comfortable against the skin. But somewhere along the way, a much simpler—and less accurate—idea took hold:
Cotton is premium. Polyester is cheap.
The truth is that neither fiber is automatically luxurious, comfortable, durable, or poorly made.
There is thin, rough cotton clothing that loses its shape quickly. There is also carefully engineered polyester clothing designed for moisture management, vivid printing, durability, warmth, or athletic performance.
A garment feels premium because of the entire package: its fabric weight, knit or weave, construction, finishing, lining, print quality, fit, and intended purpose.
Let’s untangle what actually matters.
Cotton and Polyester Are Built Differently
Cotton is a natural cellulose fiber valued for softness, absorbency, and a familiar feel against the skin. It readily absorbs moisture, which can be comfortable during ordinary wear but may also cause the fabric to remain wet longer after heavy perspiration.
Polyester is a manufactured fiber that absorbs relatively little moisture into the fiber itself. This can help polyester fabrics dry more quickly, resist wrinkles, and retain their shape.
That difference does not make one universally better. It makes them useful for different purposes.
Cotton is often chosen for:
- A soft, natural hand-feel
- Everyday casual clothing
- Comfortable, breathable basics
- Direct-to-garment printing
- Customers who prefer natural fibers
- Lower-intensity everyday wear
Polyester is often chosen for:
- Moisture-wicking performance
- Quick-drying apparel

- Lightweight warmth and fleece apparel
Is Polyester Breathable?
It can be.
Breathability is not determined by fiber content alone. The knit, weave, thickness, density, surface treatment, and garment construction all influence how easily air and moisture vapor move through a fabric.
A lightweight polyester mesh may provide excellent airflow. A dense polyester shell or heavily coated fabric may provide much less. Cotton can also vary from light and airy to thick and tightly constructed.
This is why saying “polyester does not breathe” is too broad.
A better question is: How was this particular fabric constructed, and what was it designed to do?
Moisture-Wicking Is Not the Same as Absorbency
This distinction is one of polyester’s biggest advantages.
Cotton is absorbent. It pulls moisture into its fibers and can hold a noticeable amount of it. That may feel comfortable during ordinary wear, but after heavy sweating, cotton can become damp, heavier, and slower to dry.
Moisture-wicking polyester works differently.
Instead of storing large amounts of moisture inside the fiber, a properly engineered fabric helps move perspiration away from the skin and spread it across a larger surface area. That larger surface area allows the moisture to evaporate more efficiently.
This is one reason polyester is widely used for:
- Athletic shirts
- Running apparel
- Performance hoodies
- Base layers
- Outdoor clothing
- Warm-weather uniforms
- Travel apparel
Not every polyester garment is automatically moisture-wicking. Its yarn, knit, finish, and construction must support that function. However, well-designed performance polyester can offer a major advantage when staying dry matters.
Why Polyester Works So Well for All-Over Printing
Polyester is especially important in all-over-print apparel because it works exceptionally well with dye-sublimation printing.
During sublimation, heat allows the dye to bond with polyester fibers. Rather than sitting as a thick layer on top of the garment, the color becomes part of the fabric.
This allows for:
- Edge-to-edge artwork
- Detailed patterns
- Rich, vivid color
- Large-scale illustrations
- Smooth color transitions
- Designs that remain flexible across the printed area
This is particularly valuable when artwork is intended to cover sleeves, hoods, front panels, back panels, or nearly the entire garment.

Cotton and cotton-blend garments remain excellent surfaces for many printing methods, particularly within collections such as our graphic T-shirts. However, for highly detailed, full-coverage artwork, polyester offers creative possibilities that traditional surface printing often cannot reproduce in quite the same way.
What Does GSM Mean?
GSM stands for grams per square meter.
It measures how much one square meter of fabric weighs. In general, a higher GSM indicates a heavier or denser fabric, while a lower GSM indicates a lighter fabric.
However, GSM does not directly measure:
- Softness
- Fiber quality
- Breathability
- Stitching quality
- Durability
- Warmth
- Stretch
- Print quality
- Comfort
- Overall craftsmanship
A high-GSM garment can still feel stiff, rough, or poorly constructed. A lower-GSM performance shirt can feel exceptionally smooth and work perfectly for its intended purpose.
Quality comes from matching the fabric weight and construction to the garment’s intended use—not simply choosing the largest GSM number available.
A Visual Guide to Fabric Weight
The following ranges are general shopping guides rather than universal quality grades. Manufacturers may classify fabric weights differently, and the ideal GSM depends on the garment’s purpose.
T-Shirts and Lightweight Tops
Ultralight performance tops, hot-weather wear, and layering.
Everyday tees, activewear, and breathable tops.
Standard casual tees and more structured performance shirts.
Premium-feel tees, streetwear, and more structured garments.
Heavy streetwear, oversized silhouettes, and highly structured tees.
Hoodies and Sweatshirts
Layering, transitional weather, and lightweight fashion hoodies.
Everyday hoodies, all-over-print apparel, and moderate warmth.
Warmer fleece garments and more structured sweatshirts.
Cold-weather garments, dense streetwear, and heavy fleece apparel.
Important: A lighter garment is not automatically inferior. A lightweight moisture-wicking top may be more technically advanced—and better suited to its job—than a thick garment that traps heat and dries slowly.
Does Higher GSM Mean More Premium?
Not necessarily.
Higher-GSM fabrics often feel more substantial and may provide:
- Greater structure
- Increased opacity
- A heavier drape
- More perceived durability
- Additional warmth
Those traits can create a premium impression, especially in heavyweight tees and cold-weather sweatshirts.
However, added weight can also reduce airflow or make a garment uncomfortable in warmer conditions. A premium performance top may intentionally use a lower GSM to remain light, breathable, and quick-drying.
Premium does not simply mean heavier. Premium means thoughtfully made for its purpose.
Where Does Fleece Lining Fit In?
Fleece deserves special attention because shoppers often use the word as though it describes one exact material.
It does not.
“Fleece” generally describes a fabric with a soft, raised, or brushed surface designed to trap insulating air. It may be made from polyester, cotton, a cotton-polyester blend, or another fiber combination.
A hoodie or sweatshirt may have:
- A smooth jersey interior
- Lightly brushed fleece
- Dense brushed-back fleece
- Microfleece
- Sherpa-style fleece
- A separate lining layer
- A fleece-like interior created from the garment’s primary fabric
What fleece can add
- Greater warmth
- A softer interior feel
- Improved insulation
- A cozy, substantial hand-feel
- Better cold-weather comfort
What fleece does not guarantee
- A heavyweight garment
- Exceptional warmth
- High breathability
- Luxury construction
- Long-term durability
A lightweight fleece can feel soft while providing only moderate warmth. A dense fleece may provide more insulation while allowing less airflow. Fabric weight, fiber content, brushing, stitching, and intended climate all matter.

What Actually Makes a Garment Premium?
When judging clothing quality, look beyond the fiber label.
1. Fabric construction
The knit or weave influences softness, airflow, stretch, drape, durability, and moisture movement.
2. Appropriate fabric weight
The GSM should suit the product. A summer performance shirt and a winter hoodie should not be judged by the same weight standard.
3. Surface and hand-feel
Premium fabric should feel appropriate for its purpose—smooth, soft, structured, brushed, lightweight, or substantial.
4. Stitching and finishing
Clean seams, secure hems, aligned panels, reinforced stress points, and neat finishing often reveal more about quality than fiber content alone.
5. Print method
The ideal printing process depends on both the fabric and the design. Cotton and cotton-blend garments work well with several surface-printing techniques, while polyester enables vivid, full-coverage sublimation.
6. Moisture and temperature management
A garment should handle heat, airflow, perspiration, and insulation in a way that matches its intended use.
7. Shape retention
A quality garment should continue to fit and hang properly after normal wear and laundering.
8. Design integration
With all-over-print clothing, premium construction also means artwork that has been thoughtfully adapted to the garment’s panels, seams, sleeves, hood, and overall silhouette.
